What is the difference between a “Pet Quality” rat and a “Feeder Quality” rat?
Our group guidelines on what makes a rat or mouse pet quality are as follows:
· Pet rats or mice are selectively line bred for coats, colors, temperament, health, and body type. This provides animals with less health issues that will live happier longer lives.
Pet rats may also be given some sort of temperament testing by the breeder to determine if they have the temperament to make a good pet.
· Pet rats will not bite or attack people or other rats with intent to harm or have any temperament issues above all else.
· Pet rats will be well socialized and even tempered .
Our group guidelines on what makes a rat or mouse feeder quality are as follows:
· Feeder rats and mice can be ill tempered or of unregulated genetic lines that were not selectively bred for a purpose.
· Feeder rats are commonly found at pet stores as food for carnivores little to no care is taken in breeding these rats making them more prone to have short lives and health problems.
· Feeder rats and mice are often more prone to health issue due to unregulated breeding, a obviously sick rat should never be sold even as a feeder.
We would also like to note that “Feeder quality” rats and mice can still make great pets as temperaments are individual to each animal, however if you choose to purchase a “Feeder quality” rat or mouse you must be prepared for a increased chance of health issues, and temperament problems may come with age.
With that being said if you are still unsure of the quality of your rats or mice please feel free to contact a mod or admin for more information on the subject!
